Controlling Our Anger In trying to control his bad temper, a father told his son that every time he lost his temper he must hammer a nail into their back garden fence. The boy lost his temper so often that by the end of his first day he had one hundred nails hammered deeply into the fence. After slowly learning that it was much easier to control his anger than to drive nails into the fence, the numbers of nails slowly reduced. He told this to his father, who then advised him to pull out one nail for each day he was able to control his temper. Finally the day came where the young boy had removed every single nail from the fence. With pride, he took his father’s hand and led him to the fence. His father smiled. “You have done well my son”, his father said. “But look at the damage you have done to this fence. When you say or act out of anger, you may leave scars that are difficult to repair.“ Though we should always keep calm and controlled of our emotions, let us make use of Ramadan to improve or develop our ability to do so. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No one has swallowed back anything more excellent in the sight of Allah, Who is Great and Glorious, than anger he restrains, seeking to please Allah, The Most High." (Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 5116 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar)
