Expect Forest Hills to come back next week to defend its first Fil Championship crown and tomorrow for Camp John Hay as it seeks its fourth straight crown in the Seniors Fil Championship. Despite a somber November for a country recently hard hit by what could be the strongest typhoon in years, the Fil-Am officially started Friday with the ceremonial tee at the two playing venues at Camp John Hay and Baguio Country Club courses. So here we are again, we are back as host of the biggest amateur golf tournament in the country and maybe the oldest, said Fil-Am executive committee chair Shin Paul Chan. Chan added that P1 million is pledged for victims of the typhoon that struck Visayas, particularly Leyte and Samar last November 8. The Fil-Am Foundation has pledged to donate P500,000 and the players are matching it with another P500,000, said the BCC resident manager. Already on its 64th year, the Fil-Am returned yesterday with the 10th year of the seniors sides. This year, however, the festive mood of the Fil-Am is reduced after the devastations of typhoon Yolanda which hit the Visayas leaving in its wake more than 4,000 dead and devastations that could cost the government at least P250 billion in reconstruction efforts. While an international effort led by American armed forces bring relief to victims of the typhoon that brought winds up to 315 kilometer hour and waves up to seven meters, Filipino golfers as well as international players tour the par 61 BCC and par 69 CJH courses. Co-host team CJH returns with its big guns ablazing as it defends the premiere seniors Fil Championship title and hoping to continue the streak that started three years ago. Were ready to defend our crown, said CJH main stay Bong Mandapat as the former city councilor and former Department of Transportation and Communication for Cordillera director returns with an intact CJH team that could be the best in the country. Last year, Mandapat, Fred Puckett, Clyde Cabreros and lone Korean Park Jong Won romped off with the title winning by 26 shots over Manila Southwoods. The Southwoods squad of Florene delos Santos, Poch Hernandez, Freddie Mendoza, Edmund Yee and Fred Jumalon had been CJHs biggest rival for years and earlier was denied of the crown when they fell against delos Santos and crew when they were still the Golden Oats and later Komatsu, which beat them through count back in 2009. Next week, sees the debut of Forest Hills which defends against supposedly stronger teams. Forest Hills snatched the limelight last year when then defending champion collapsed in the final round giving up two points to rules infraction to hand the first time winner the title in a golden platter. Forest Hills outscored Mizuno 114-111 and nip the latter, the overnight leader, by two points, thanks to former pro Raymond Sangils infraction when he putted after a double bogey that cost the former champion the title.
