Conversation with Jacqui last night about how politics has changed. I recalled the time Sir Robert Menzies came to my primary school (he was the local member). I was five at the time. A different era – no minders or security people, just Ming and the kids. He came to my class and talked to us about his school days in Jeparit. My teacher Miss Towers (who I had a serious crush on) pulled out a map and showed us where that was. She then asked if we had any questions for Mr Menzies. So I put up my hand and asked why he didn’t become a farmer like everyone else in the country. “You’ve always asked the pollies those annoying hard questions,’’ says Jacqui.
