Convict station/hospital. Port Alfred has a lovely hospital now, which too has a long and interesting history. :) Built almost accidentally, if that is the correct description, as a temporary convict station, for the convicts who were brought up from the Cape to build the pier. Bearing in mind, slaves and labour, were not allowed to be employed by the settlers at that time, this meant, that only the government could use them. The convicts, under pretty harsh conditions, obviously went a little mad at times. There is a cave at the back of the hospital, where you can clearly see the hideous conditions they went through, by being housed in the small tunnel at night. There are, in addition, the original isolation cells, still in position. The Port Alfred convict station was the largest in South Africa. Later, by many years, the hospital part grew, to a coordinated mental institution, then a hospital. Pics, are not always in order 1. A view showing the coco pans used to cart rock to the site. All pics are circa late 1800s. I will date if I can :) 2. Old hospital complex. 3. Cave. 4. Tin house, that is still in the grounds. 5. Inside the cave. 6. Isolation/jails in the grounds.
