The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is committed to providing high quality and engaging programming & services to our public. We are looking for a summer interpreter for an approximate 16 week period from mid-May to end of August 2014. Successful candidates must be willing to work flexible working hours up to 35 hours a week over a 7 day week. This is a casual opportunity with an anticipated end date of August 29, 2014. Duties: Under the supervision of the Curator of Education and Visitor Experience, the Young Canada Works interpreter will assist Museum staff to research, develop and deliver hands-on educational programs. This includes surveying maritime-based crafts, researching craft and ‘making’ educational programing as well as prototyping various programs for a multi-level audience. The programmer will focus on the idea of ‘making’ within studio/workshop environment. Working with fundamental materials such as wood, metals, textiles, composites and renewables the Heritage Crafts Interpreter will facilitate unique visitor experiences through hands-on, educational, interpretive programing. Main Areas of work: Museum offices, workshop, museum galleries and outdoor pavilion Qualifications: The candidate must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution, having preferably completed at least one year of study. Must be registered in the Young Canada Works (YCW) on-line candidate inventory (youngcanadaworks.gc.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the program. Design, architecture or craft experience is required along with good communication and organizational skills. Computer proficiency with common software and web search engines is required. Interpersonal and problem solving skills are needed and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. A passion for history and people should be demonstrated. Candidate must also be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision. Strong assets would include, previous experience with public program development and presentation skills a similar setting as heritage, arts or cultural field. Assets would also include fluency in working with several materials, experience in developing or delivering educational programs.
