Cool Song I Heard Today - I posted a DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist mix a few weeks ago. It was an hour long mixtape of old soul and funk obscurities with some scratching and typical DJ tomfoolery. THIS track represents why I am such a hardcore fan of his music. Certain musician and old school rock fan friends of mine might object to me calling DJ Shadow or anyone with the letters D and J in front of their names a maker of music. Yes, this album, Endtroducing... is made entirely of samples but not in the way MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice used samples. What they did was take a tried and true well know hook, repeat it and slap some original lyrics on it and call it a song. That is cheap, unoriginal and unimaginative. DJ Shadow spends countless hours scouring through crates of obscure LPs looking for just the right sounds. He takes little bits of songs you never heard of, a bass line here, a vocal from over there some keyboards from somewhere else and puts them all together to create a whole new song that sounds nothing like any of the sources. What he does with drums in amazing. Taking whole parts of incredible sounding drums and splicing them up into individual hits then reassembling them to his own purpose. His albums are beautiful, emotional and completely original works of art. This requires a passionate drive, ambition and, yes, musical talent to pull off. Gawd bless his obsessive little brain.
