Cool story about the bed... I was on the road about 180 shows a year back in 97-98, and I had one day off at my home in Nashville, TN. Liz was back in Calgary visiting family, so I was bachin it for a couple days. I walked into the house, and it was sweltering. It was a typical hot and humid Nashville summer, and my air conditioner was broken. The neighbour swings by, and lets me know that while I was away, a storm rolled through, and lightening struck a 75 tall tree in my front yard. He saw a lot of sparks as the lightening then bounced from the tree to my house... We figured thats when the A/C blew. So after a very warm and terrible night of sleep, my good friend, co-writer, and co-producer Steve Rosen popped over for a writing session. As we walked up the front drive, it was clear the tree was dead, and would have to be removed. Steve mentioned it was a sycamore tree, and then told me a story he had heard about a little boy who had grown up in an abusive home. Every-time the boys father would come home, the scared child would climb a sycamore tree in their yard to escape the abuse. We then got to talking about a Sunday School lesson I remembered about a short little man named Zacchaeus who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus as he walked by. Through the ages, the sycamore tree has become a symbol for forgiveness and redemption because of that story in The Bible. So Steve and I felt like we were onto a song idea, and the song The Sycamore Tree was born, which eventually made it onto my Outside The Frame album. Our hope was that the song would encourage the many victims of abuse, strengthen them to break the chain of abuse, and remind them that they are not alone, and that help is available. You can hear a live snippet here- https://m.youtube/watch?v=frmxypOyTx8 Liz and I eventually had that massive tree taken down, but we just couldnt bear to part with it. We used some of the smaller limbs to have this bed made as a constant reminder of the hope which exists and the change that is possible, even in the shadow of an abusive past. If you are in an abusive situation, call an abuse hotline, or tell someone you can trust. Theres nothing to be ashamed of, you are not alone, and there is hope and healing on the other side. -pb-
