Copa Libertadores Atletico earn important win, Garcilaso beaten (PA) Wednesday 19 March 2014 Colombian side Atletico Nacional clinched a vital 1-0 win away to their near-namesakes from uruguay, Nacional, in Copa Libertadores Group Six. In a hard-fought clash, the visitors took advantage of a counter-attack in the 63rd minute when midfielder Sherman Cardenas sent Edwin Cardona through one-on-one with goalkeeper Jorge Bava and he made no mistake. The win moves Atletico level on seven points with group leaders Gremio, who have a game in hand. Defeat leaves Nacional bottom with one point and coach Gerardo Pelusso said: The match was very even, a clash between two totally different styles. Their precision with the ball made the difference. Now we have to move forward and pick ourselves up. Elsewhere, Universidad de Chile saw off Perus Real Garcilaso 1-0 to pull three points clear atop Group Five. The hosts hit the crossbar three times but scored the crucial goal on the hour mark when striker Rodrigo Mora was brought down inside the box and goalkeeper Johnny Herrera converted the resulting penalty. Velez Sarsfield also had to be patient before breaking down Bolivian side The Strongest to go three points clear in Group One. Goals from Lucas Pratto in the 79th minute and Jorge Correa a minute later finally earned the Argentinian side a 2-0 win. Group Four remains tight after Colombias Independiente Santa Fe drew 2-2 against Zamora. Independiente playmaker Omar Perez broke the deadlock with a cross-shot from outside the box but striker Juan Falcon levelled for the Venezuelan side with a header from a corner shortly before the break. Falcons outstanding long-range strike then put Zamora ahead but Perez equalised with two minutes to go. Both teams are on four points, as are Nacional Asuncion, with group leaders Atletico Mineiro on seven. Brazilian side Botafogo defeated Ecuadorian minnows Independiente del Valle 1-0 to go top of Group Two. The goal came in just the third minute when right back Lucas overlapped and sent in a long ball that was headed home by experienced striker Juan Ferreyra. Santos Laguna, from mexico, beat Venezuelas Anzoategui 3-0 in Group Eight, with Andres Renteria, Javier Orozco and Oribe Peralta on target.
