Copperstone University Chancellor Dr. Peter Matoka has died Dr. Matoka 86, a Freedom fighter and academician died Friday morning, September 12, 2014 around 4:30am at University Teaching Hospital where he had been hospitalised. His death has been confirmed by his Son, Anthony who said the late Freedom Fighter had been well of late and was hospitalised for 10 days. Aanthony said the funeral is being held at the late Dr. Matoka’s residence at Plot 29B Mosi road in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill area. Dr Matoka was the first University graduate from North Western province and was one of the 1oo graduates at Independence. He at one point served as Mwinilunga Member of Parliament. Dr. Kaunda appointed him to a 14 member. cabinet in 1964 as Minister of Information and Postal Services. Dr Matoka also served in UNIP’s Central Committee before he was sent in diplomatic mission. At the age of 60, Dr Matoka decided to pursue a PHD in Sociology at the University of Warwick in the UK before returning to Zambia to become a lecturer at the University of Zambia. After lecturing at the University of Zambia for many years he proceeded to become chancellor at Copperstone University, the position which he held at the time of his death. Dr. Matoka was one of the four surviving members of the 1964 cabinet. A selected team of Copperstone university members of staff with some students are expected to be in lusaka by 2moro and burial arrangements will be communicated later. MHSRP
