Minutes pass and you begrudgingly wonder if your crush has received the message, and, if so, they have even read it. Luckily, technology has a way of letting us know whether or not our messages have been received – kind of taking the edge (or not?) off of a seriously stressful situation. And now, one of the world’s biggest messaging services, WhatsApp, has introduced a new feature that will change the way we communicate (especially with people of particular interest) forever. Ladies and gentleman, say hello to the brand new ‘blue tick’ – a simple feature that surprisingly enough can mean so much. The much talked about ‘blue tick’ is the new way of letting you know that someone has actually read your message. It has been common misconception that the standard ‘double ticks’ in WhatsApp meant that someone has read your message. When, in actual fact, this simply meant that your message was delivered. As WhatsApp explains on their FAQ page, a single tick means that your message has reached the WhatsApp servers while a double tick means that your message was delivered to the intended recipient. It never actually meant that your message was read. But now the days of wondering is behind us. The double tick will now turn blue once the recipient has read your message. In a group message scenario, the double tick will turn blue only once every participant in the group has read your message – so you can also be sure that your message has reached everyone in your group. Obviously, WhatsApp is not the first messaging service to roll out a feature like this. Many other messaging services have been doing that for long, including WhatsApp’s parent company, Facebook, where users can see whether or not their friends have ready their inbox messages because it quite clearly says ‘read’. While most people are happy about the new addition to their favourite messaging service, others are not so ecstatic. This is probably because they don’t want to face up to the fact that their Romeo is perhaps not that into them. Now, the suspense will be killing them more. Whether you’re for the blue tick or against it, it’s here to stay. And now you can be sure that your mom received your request for a homemade meal or that your friends did indeed get that invite to your next braai.
