Corin and I would like to announce the arrival of Rata Falcon - TopicsExpress

Corin and I would like to announce the arrival of Rata Falcon Walker Bain, born at Waikato Hospital on 26/7/14 at 3:54am. The little man was 3.6kg (7.15lb), had 9cm feet and was 56cm long! Apologies to those who have been waiting for photos and details – we had a hectic start to parenthood. Bubs had trouble breathing at birth and spent his first 40 hours on the neonatal icu ward but now he’s doing great and we’re all home. There has been a lot of discussion about his name. He is named for his Dads favourite tree – for those not from the Shaky Isles, the rata is a beautiful tall tree with vibrant red flowers - and of course we love the New Zealand falcon, but theres more to it than that. Theres a great story about an Egyptian scientist named Eratosthenes who was the chief librarian at the Library of Alexandria. He calculated the circumference of the world and in 232BC sent Captain Rata and Maui the Navigator to sail around the world and prove his theory. They never returned to Egypt, but paintings that document their journey were later found in New Guinea and Chile. One possible explanation is that they couldnt find a way past South America so turned back – and landed in New Zealand. His middle name comes from Robert Falcon Scott, brave and stoic polar explorer, the famous namesake of Scott Base in Antarctica. We discovered today the farmer whose incredible station we live on is the great, great, great grandson of Scott. Excellent serendipity and what a small world! So hes named for two great explorers. We are super excited to guide him along the beginning of his next adventure. Thank you all so much for your well wishes. We have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our friends, family and community. The last two weeks have been spent basking in love up here in the hills, crying tears of joy for how very lucky we are. xxxx B, C & R
