Corn Fields: When we were youngsters on the farm we watched the corn grow. When it grew up over our heads thats when the fun began. Walking forever through the rows of field corn, we became experts at finding agates. The agates were deposited first into pockets. At the end of day our separate deposits went into tin cans. when we had enough wed take them to town and let Walter Silbaugh check them over. He chided us every time. Many of our agates were too small. Thed be sand by the time they were done in the rock polisher. Out of his good heart he bought them anyway. Other times wed whip through the fields playing hide and seek. Many times it was a straight exit to the pastures away from earshot of our foster mom. If she could hear us you can bet there was work to be done. When the corn was ripe the neighborhood farmers would help or send a trailer to haul. The corn cobs were chopped then stored in the silo for winter feed for bossies (cows). When we went to the pastures to bring the cows home for milking we called them like, Come Boss!! Come Boss!!. When the corn was harvested my foster dad always made sure some was left at the end of the field for deer, birds or some such critter. My brothers, Joe and Jerry and I became expert stalkers. Wed belly crawl just to watch whole herds at the fields end. It was fantastic just laying quietly watching and listening to their chewing sounds. After we could bear no more quiet movement or it just got time to go home for bed (we were in bed at 8pm sharpe), wed rise laughing. The deer became a whirlwind as they jumped the fence and scurried away. They always were back for another days end viewing. We snuck up on skunks too. Wed sneak away with Queenie very quietly. We didnt want to be sprayed. Queenie, what a dog she was. As I eat my sweet corn, those are the moments living on my foster parents farm Id never trade. Walking back from deer viewing to our house with the sun downed sky behind it. Sheer Pleasure!
