Coronation Street legend Liz Dawn has paid tribute to Anne Kirkbride, saying that the heart of the show has been ripped out. Deirdre Barlow actress Kirkbride passed away peacefully in a Manchester hospital on Monday (January 19) after a short illness. Dawn, who played Vera Duckworth on the ITV soap for 34 years until 2008, said that she is shocked and saddened by her friend Kirkbrides passing. Its like the heart of the show has been ripped out because she was so well loved by the cast and crew and by the millions of viewers who watched it, Dawn wrote. She was so lovely and I feel so sad. Im so shocked because she had previously beaten illness and she showed such courage and spirit. I didnt realise she was ill, it was such a shock to hear that another illness has come and taken her away at such a young age. Dawn added: After going through so much, Im so shocked to find that something else has come and taken her away from us. Kirkbride spent more than 40 years on the soap as the bespectacled Deirdre, whose romance with Ken Barlow (William Roache) spanned decades. Dawn was one of many Corrie stars to pay tribute to Kirkbride, with Roache, Michelle Keegan and Beverley Callard also acknowledging her passing.
