Correct answer: The curtains are open exposing the bare screen. I had the curtains open and the stage lights on to light up the room so I could see better to clean carpet. There is historic significance to the reasoning behind a main curtain and hiding the screen before the show starts. Over 100 years ago, movies replaced actors on stages across America. You would never see an actor before the show. This tradition lived on in movie theaters for many decades until saturation advertising was adopted by just about every theater. While we are giving up about $30k a year in revenue by not having ads on our screen, I feel tradition and being a historic theater we need to do things a bit differently. It will be over my dead body that ads go on our screen! A second part of this tradition is closing the curtain after the preview and reopening it for the feature. Again, this dates back to live acting days when the curtain would close to allow scene changes. In the golden days of movie theaters, the preshow and preview was Act 1 and the feature was Act 2. Hence, the closing and reopening of our curtain. New megaplexes dont even have main curtains. Many are doing away with the box office as well, replacing them with self service kiosks and enticing you to spend more money at the concession stand to pick up tickets in some theaters as well. Again, over my dead body will our box office change! Not to say I am opposed to change. Installing digital projection 2 years ago turned out to be the best move we could make for quality. No more scratched or damaged 35mm prints. Each show is perfect. Were no longer subject to high school employees at chains ripping down and damaging 35mm prints. Congratulations to Elissa Mihelcic for winning a family four pack of tickets for free movies for the next year and a $100 concession voucher! Ed Buchinski, President, Grand Theater
