Cosafa Cup Full Time: Zambia 0-0 South Africa * Zambia won 5-3 on penalties Date: 17 July 2013 Venue: Levy Mwanawasa Stadium A missed Learato Chabangu penalty saw South Africa lose their 2013 Cosafa Cup semifinal match 5-3 on penalties after 120 minutes of action against Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Wednesday night finished 0-0. The first 45 was a cagey affair as both teams were keeping it tight in the midfield and neither were pressing too far forward in fear of leaving themselves exposed at the back. Consequently, chances on goal were few and far between as both teams’ defence stood firm and produced admirably displays. Zambia certainly saw more of the ball, but they failed to really convert their dominant possession into goal scoring chances. Festus Mbewe did manage to put the ball into the back of the South African net in the 12th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a foul on Bafana goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands The only real chance of the half came in the 22nd minute as Bornwell Mwape let rip with a powerful shot from just outside the box, but he saw his effort sail narrowly wide. Besides from that attempt there was very little to write about as the half ended 0-0. The second 45 saw both teams taking more of an attacking approach and Zambia had their first shot on goal three minutes after the restart as Fackson Kapumbu forced Sandilands into a good save from a 24-yard free-kick. In the 56th minute Zambia were awarded another free-kick in a dangerous area, but this time Mwape fired his 22-yard effort narrowly over the bar. Four minutes later and Bafana had their first real chance of the entire match as Lerato Chabangu saw his corner-kick headed onto the post and then Ruzaigh Gameldien flashing the rebound over the crossbar from only a couple of yards out. Bafana were unlucky yet again in the 82nd minute as Chabangu met a left wing cross from Mandla Masango, but the Swallows man saw his volley from six-yards out strike the woodwork for the second time. Four minutes later and it was Zambia’s turn to hit the frame of the goal as Kondwani Mtonga hit the right-hand post with an eight-yard volley after latching onto a right-side free-kick. The 90 minutes ended goalless and the game entered into extra time, but again no team could break the deadlock in the added 30 minutes as we went into a penalty shootout to decide the tie. A missed penalty by Learato Chabangu, the only of the shootout, saw South Africa lose the 5-3 on penalties. Zambia will now face Zimbabwe in the final of the Coasafa Cup while South Africa will take on Lesotho in the losers final.
