Cost of raising a child on the rise CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The cost of living continues to rise and that can put an additional strain on parents. 22news looks at what expenses parents are now faced with the most. One of the biggest challenges to a parent today can be to provide their children with a home. That’s according a newly release report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that found the cost of a home takes up about 30 percent of the total cost to raise a child. Child care and education made up another large portion of that cost. 22News spoke to mothers here in Western Mass about what other costs they experienced. Joan Barnard, from West Springfield, told 22News, “Because the prices of everything just keep going up. And kids need more and more and more especially with technology and tablets and computers and all that kind of stuff.” The USDA report found that the expense of raising a child went down as a family had more children, because of things like sharing a bedroom and hand-me-down clothing. The report looked at the cost of raising a child after birth and before college. The report found that the total cost to raise a child went up about 2% in the last year and is likely going to continue to rise.
