Cougar Ridge Students Learn Stage Craft from Seattle Shakespeare Company Actors Cougar Ridge Elementary students learned stage craft from three Seattle Shakespeare Company (SSC) actors in a week-long series of activities. At the culmination of the week’s events, students attended an assembly where they reviewed and demonstrated many of the stage craft techniques they had learned, such as body levels and movement shapes. Students created tableaux-style scenes from the popular fairy tale Cinderella. These freeze-frame scenes allowed students to dissect the story portrayed on stage and better understand the meaningful uses of “body levels” and “movement shapes” created by student actors. During the movement group demonstrations, fourth and fifth grade students acted out scenes narrated by an SSC actor. Students did not talk during these scenes and used movements in place of words. After the performances, audience members were encouraged to share what body levels and movement shapes they had seen portrayed on stage. Next, the SSC actors showcased another mini drama. Although their play was unfamiliar to students, students deciphered what was happening on stage by reading the body language and movements portrayed by the actors. Throughout the short drama the SSC actors froze scene and asked students to explain what they had seen acted out on stage. Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the dramatic presentations from both fellow students and the SSC actors. Many students laughed at the silly portrayals and facial expressions created during the assembly.
