Could Instant-Runoff Voting be a Panacea for Corruption and Voter - TopicsExpress

Could Instant-Runoff Voting be a Panacea for Corruption and Voter Apathy? The Plurality System of voting used in the vast majority of U.S. elections is a dream come true for Democrats and Republicans alike. First, it props up the myth that a Third Party vote is a wasted vote. It also scares people away from Third Party candidates by painting them as “spoilers”, potentially leading to the election of the less popular mainstream candidate. Plus, it decreases turnout by presenting voters a choice between the lesser of two evils. Worst of all, with just two options in play, it allows corruption the easiest and cheapest possible path to power. Can America do better? This informative [albeit cutesy] video explains how Instant-Runoff Voting would allow expanded participation, as well as eliminating the spoiler factor. It could also cuts costs by eliminating the need for runoff elections. And by expanding the number of candidates, The Funders, as Lawrence Lessig calls them, would have a much tougher time buying influence.
