Countdown to The Claah, T-plus 1: I Fought the Law OK, so: in an act of absent-mindedness so profound only I could commit it, I thought the show was on Saturday when it was really on Friday. So, I missed it. But I’m not done with this brief catalog of why you should care about The Clash. The final installment: “I Fought the Law”. Strictly speaking, “I Fought the Law” is a rock and roll standard recorded as early as 1959, and the band’s version is a cover. If we consider reality, though, it becomes clear who really owns the song: The Clash. Between Mick Jones’ (primarily one note) guitar riff and drummer Topper Headon’s drum fill – six hits on the toms right on the line “Robbing people with a six-gun” – the performance makes the subject matter of a young convict’s lament come fully alive. Enjoy. https://youtube/watch?v=FKIzjF25sP8
