Countdown to WrestleMania XXX. 9 days away. Today’s WrestleMania Rewind is WrestleMania XIV. There are a few key dates that I can remember in my life, and March 29, 1998, is one of them. This is the day that my favorite wrestler of all time won his first WWE Championship. It was Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels for the WWE Title with Mike Tyson as the Special Ring Enforcer. Iron Mike came in the match as a member of HBK’s rebellious D-Generation X group, but he would leave as an ally of the Texas Rattlesnake. The ending to this match was unforgettable, especially if you’ve seen it 30 times like I have. With the referee knocked out, Shawn attempts Sweet Chin Music. Austin ducks and goes for the Stone Cold Stunner. Shawn escapes and throws Austin into the ropes. He bounces back and is met with another attempt at Sweet Chin Music. Austin catches the kick, spins HBK around, and delivers the Stunner. Tyson jumps in the ring and double crosses DX by making the three count on Shawn. “Austin is the champion! Stone Cold! Stone Cold! Stone Cold! The Austin Era has begun!” The aftermath of this match has to make this WWE Championship change the biggest of all time. The Attitude Era had been ushered in. With Austin as their champ, WWE began to crush WCW in the ratings and would ultimately win the Monday Night Wars. The wrestling business was never and has never been as big as it was in 1998 when Stone Cold raised hell every single week. That is why Stone Cold Steve Austin has to be considered the greatest Superstar of all time. AND THAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE, CAUSE STONE COLD SAID SO!!!
