County Council Public Hearing Dear Friend of the Library, The Wicomico County Councils Public Hearing on the FY15 Operating Budget will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 6:00 pm in the Midway Room of the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. We encourage all community members to attend and speak out for the library. If you are interested in speaking to support the librarys increase in funding for the coming fiscal year, the main key points are: This community needs the services and resources of the library, the harder the economic times, the more they depend on the library. By limiting our hours, we have disenfranchised a large group of citizens who, due to work and family commitments, find that Sunday is their day with time to visit the library. This is the single greatest comment the library receives is, When are you going to open on Sundays again? The library has been operating in the red since the 2009/2010 fiscal cycle. We have used our fund balance to limit the cuts we have had to make to our services, staff and resources. We have reached the point where our auditors say we should not spend any more of this balance. We would need to consider additional cuts in order to balance our budget. The library is the great equalizer, providing resources for everyone. Again, we urge all members of the community to attend and voice their opinions on the importance of Wicomico Public Library. This is our opportunity to speak publicly on the impact that the proposed additional funding will have in making the library as accessible to the community as possible.
