Court jails drunk for menacing behaviour Source: The National, Monday July 7th, 2014 GROWN up children should not create problems for their parents but rather work hard to repay them, a magistrate says. Lae District Court magistrate Nasaling Bingtau said this last Friday when sentencing a 27-year-old man to prison for threatening his father with a knife and being drunk and disorderly. The court heard that Justine Onne, from Siassi, Morobe, who had been drunk on June 30, at the Sialum Compound, in Lae, took out a knife and threatened his family members while demanding money. He later went to a nearby roadside market and threatened members of the public. The court heard that the public wrestled him to the ground and took the knife off him before handing him to police. Mitiang Onne, the defendant’s father, who was the main complainant in the matter, said he was fed up with his son’s behaviour. He told police it was not the first time he was threatened by his son demanding money and he wanted him locked up. Onne pleaded guilty. Bingtau told the accused that he was a grown up man and should work to support his family. “Drunkards have created many problems on our streets,” Bingtau said. “School fights are happening all over the city because of drunks. “Your father and community are fed up of your actions.” Bingtau sentenced Onne to 15 months in prison. He will serve 12 months for threatening his father and three months for being drunk and disorderly.
