Courtesy posting for Dakota County Historical Society AUTHORS SUNDAY AT THE LeDUC HISTORIC ESTATE Fred Johnson who wrote The Seawing Disaster of 1890 will be the guest author at the LeDuc Historic Estate, 1629 Vermillion Street, Hastings, MN 55033 on Sunday, August 17, 5 p.m. Mr. Johnson, a Cottage Grove resident, grew up in Red Wing, MN and inherited his interest in the Seawing from his great grandfather, Carl Oscar Anderson, a teamster who transported disaster victims to local funeral homes. He received a BA and MA in instruction and administration from University of Wisconsin, River Falls, and an education specialist degree from the College of St. Thomas. Mr. Johnson comes out of a rich background of experiences, such as being a teaching team leader for the St. Paul Public Schools and being a sports editor and columnist for the Washington County Bulletin for 12 years. In addition, he has contributed to educational publications and projects. Guests at the LeDuc Historic Estate will want to hear the full story of the Seawing, and the event that took place in 1890 that claimed the lives of 98 people on Lake Pepin. Through research in historic archives on both sides of the Mississippi, Mr. Johnson weaves a rich and compelling narrative fabric. He will read passages from his book, explain what motivates him to write, sign and sell copies of his book. The public is invited to attend this event and a $2 donation would be appreciated. Visitors are encouraged to attend the 6:30 p.m. concert (with music by The Squires) sponsored by the Hastings Concert Association in the apple orchard behind the LeDuc House. Pie, ice cream, brownies and beverages will be served for a minimal fee by a non-profit organization. Come and enjoy!! The LeDuc Historic Estate is owned by the City of Hastings and managed by Dakota County Historical Society. Please refer to dakotahistory.org or call 651-437-7055.
