Coworkers were talking about engagement rings and one of them said that rings are supposed to cost 2.5 months of your salary, pre-tax. That sounds...crazy to me. Even for someone who makes $40,000 a year (which is lower than the average per capita income in San Francisco), thats nearly a $10,000 ring...and for people in tech it could easily be 2-3x that. Do people really pay that much for engagement rings? That seems...unnecessary, by any stretch of the imagination.
