Cracked Offers 5 Writing Tips 1. End Your Story Brutally: As Cracked points out, some writers use the “last line” trick to build the rest of their story around. However, here, you’re supposed to cut right to the chase, offering not buildup, only two-pages (or so) of action that is shocking and perhaps puzzling. You never know what ideas may come out of this. 2. Drive Your Story Insane: Pick a point in your current story and make it completely bonkers. Introduce ridiculous characters, meandering events, shocking twists that have no basis in reality, or make your main character a raging lunatic without warning. 3. Abandon Your Story: Begin your story. Write a nice, involved opening. Okay, got it? You’re on the right track to a beautiful masterpiece, right? Nope. Stop writing it altogether and leave it in a drawer somewhere. Either you’ll get some amazing ideas being away from it for long stretches of time, as it is calling your name to be finished, or it was just a good exercise in honing your exposition skills. 4. Cheat On Your Story: Stop writing your story or novel. Now take one of your characters from the story or an object or person in the room and run wild. You never know what may come out of it, but if worst thing that can happen is that you took the time to focus your attention on something else to give your brain a breather. 5. Steal Someone Else’s Story: My personal favorite of this Cracked list and probably the most fun. The best example given here would be to take Melville’s Moby Dick and have Ishmael make a bunch of sperm whale jokes. Classic.
