Craig update: Thought some of you might want to hear an update. Craig and I spent a week in Chicago for follow up Dr. appointments and some research therapy. It was good to visit with the doctors and therapists that we spent 6 months with and also visit some of the other SCI patients that are still there. We have formed some lifelong friendships while on this journey. All of the appointments went well. The surgeon said the bones are fusing nicely. Yay! The other appointments were good also with positive feed back from the doctors. He had a couple of pressure spots on his feet that we had been treating. Our Dr. checked them out and they are under control and actually almost gone now. These pressure spots are nothing to be messing with because they can get out of control quickly and halt progress. We think they were caused by some different TED hose that he was given to wear. We started using the TED hose that he wore at the RIC and over time it is working. Another Yay!!! His physiatrist is pleased with his progress and wants him to continue the 5 days a week of therapy and re-evaluate in another 3 months. Craig is still doing intensive walking on the treadmill with the harness. Last night he was able to walk the circle in our house 5 laps. Two months ago he could only walk about 1/4 a lap! He is still using the walker and has one of us behind him with a wheel chair in case he falls and another person supervising with close contact. His left hand has a grip of about half the strength that you or I might have. His right hand has a grip that is barely detectable! His occupational therapist said it is time for him to start putting his left hand in his pocket and begin practicing with his right hand:) This is very exciting news to us!!! His hip flexor is getting stronger but is still week. Both groups of therapists, in Evansville and here at home, have started trying to strengthen his core and his glutes. We are hoping this will eventually translate into helping him stand on his own. No one will be happier about that than me:) He is a big boy! The day to day tasks take up a lot of out time and this is tiring work but he keeps getting stronger daily. It is time and energy well spent. Again, thank you for your prayers and encouragement! Fairfield is full of wonderful caring people! We are are amazed at the outpouring of love and support you have given us! Love to you all!
