Crash Landing... Meet Rubbish, a Lesser Black Backed Gull that was brought to us this afternoon by a worker from a transport terminal in Burntwood, Staffordshire. Rubbish is one gull from a large flock that lives around a refuse centre. He was seen crashing into the ground by onlookers and was observed falling onto his back. We are unsure of what the problem is as he is a healthy weight but does not want to stand. He could have eaten something or he may of collided with something during flight. We have given him pain relief, a wormer and some antibiotics, which he didnt like, and have settled him into a pen with some food. Lesser Black Backed Gulls are large gulls with yellow legs and a large yellow bill. They can found along the coast and inland, particularly in urban areas where there is a food source. They are omnivores feeding on almost anything edible. This type of gull is currently on the Amber List for Conservation due to a halt in the expansion of the species in the UK with more than half of the population found at fewer than ten sites. We are confident Rubbish will make a recovery as he is very bright.
