Creating Documentaries A guided journey into the hidden world of documentary filmmaking Ever wanted to understand just how the classic documentaries work? Ever wanted to make a documentary? Or perhaps you have made documentaries and want to develop your skills. Creating Documentaries offers two process-driven programs of 3 hour evening workshops integrating the theory and practise of documentary filmmaking, from conception to completion of the film. During the workshops, each course participant will have the opportunity to develop their own short documentary project under the expert mentorship of course tutor Charlie de Salis. The programs are designed to complement each other as a continuous process, but they can also be undertaken individually, as standalone courses. Creating Documentaries 1 – Documentary Form and the Creative Process (10 weeks) focusses on the creative fundamentals of documentary: form; structure; character; storytelling devices; the creative process; creating pitch documents, treatments and scripts; interview techniques; multi platform delivery; pitching; and the structure of the Australian industry – who has the money and how to access it. Notable documentaries will be deconstructed as case studies during the course. Course participants will complete the course with a treatment for their short documentary, and supporting pitch documents, all of which will be workshopped during the course sessions. Creating Documentaries 2 – Making The Film (12 weeks) picks up the process from treatment stage, taking each course participant’s project and moving through the different facets of writing, preproduction, production and post production. This will include script development, detailing the narrative framework and establishing characters; developing budgets, schedules; coverage and shot lists; establishing appropriate crews; refining interview techniques; framing the shot; shooting sequences; sound on location; on set management and trouble shooting; effective post production prep techniques; structuring the edit; the post production process; and music and sound design. Eight hours of one on one mentoring with tutor Charlie de Salis (including a half day during shooting) is built into the process for each project, and each course participant will workshop their projects with the group. Charlie de Salis (charliedesalis.au) is a writer, director, script editor, producer and screen content creator with credits in documentary, features films, short films, television drama, television commercials and high end corporate production.
