Crist looks to South Florida to raise campaign cash Charlie Crist headed to Fort Lauderdale to raise campaign cash When Charlie Crist stepped back onto the political stage Monday, some of his biggest supporters werent there. As Crist formally announced that hes seeking to regain his old job in his new party, Steve Geller and Andrew Weinstein and several others in South Florida started working their Rolodexes, scrambling to start raising the mountain of money Crist will need to succeed. The former Republican governors first fundraising event as a newly minted candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor is Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale. Nothing that involved spending money, such as crafting an invite or arranging event catering, could be arranged until after Crist filed paperwork for his campaign on Friday. Put together fast, the $3,000 per person reception is aimed at raising some quick cash. Raising $20,000 puts a supporter on the host committee, but the event was put together so quickly that the invitation emailed Monday doesnt list their names. Were doing what we can on a very, very short notice, said Geller, a lawyer, former Florida Senate Democratic leader from Cooper City and friend of Crists since their days at Florida State University.
