Why Elves you may ask?? The Icelanders seem to have the right - TopicsExpress

Why Elves you may ask?? The Icelanders seem to have the right idea.... Surveys suggest that more than half of Icelanders believe in, or at least entertain the possibility of the existence of, the Huldufolk - the hidden people. Just to be clear, Icelandic elves are not the small, green, pointy-eared variety that help Santa pack the toys at Christmas - theyre the same size as you and I, theyre just invisible to most of us. Mainly theyre a peaceable breed but if you treat them with disrespect, for example by blasting dynamite through their rock houses and churches, theyre not reticent about showing their displeasure... Icelands rugged landscape is no bucolic idyll - the very ground boils and spits irrationally, the surrounding craggy, black mountains fester menacingly and above, the sky is constantly herniated by the iron-grey clouds it strains to hold up. Its a visceral, raw and brutal beauty which makes Heathcliffs Wuthering Heights look like a prissy, pastoral watercolour... You cant live in this landscape and not believe in a force greater than you, explains Professor of Folklore Adalheidur Gudmundsdottir when I visit her at the university. She looks at me imploringly. Please dont portray Icelanders as uneducated peasants who believe in fairies, but look around you and youll understand why the power of folklore here is so strong, she says( tinyurl/pemxxqr ) In my case I identify with the Elves because of my affinity with the ancient Norse origins of the term (Old Norse; álfar) describing semi-divine beings endowed with magical powers which they may use for the benefit of mankind. More than mere myth and legend however, mankind can be elevated to the rank of Elves after death this death is not a literal demise but rather a spiritual transformation and awakening..... If you would like to apprehend the Elves for your selves, I cannot do better than recommend The Faery Faith: An Integration of Science with Spirit by Serena Roney-Dougal ( tinyurl/q64ob5q ) Its a book about the worldview of people who experience faery/elf reality. In my opinion Serena successfully portrays the result that the many ancient mythological and modern accounts as well as the scientifically studied psychic phenomena do demonstrate when considered together, that each of us is potentially aware at some level of the natural magic and interconnectedness of ourselves with the earth and infinite universe. I feel the faery faith today to be a resurgence in animism, a love of the earth, of nature, aware of spirit immanent in all matter, aware that my body is the temple of my soul, that I am spirit made manifest, that everything I do reverberates throughout the whole universe, that I am a part of the whole and contain the whole within me.... (&) the deities are understood in their abstract mythical form... Clearly and coherently joining the spiritual, metaphysical and psychological dots with their manifestations in the physical realms, presenting the faery faith as an awareness of and cooperation with the subliminal and super natural forces of which we are also made and that are virulent in nature and across the universe... more of my revew here ( tinyurl/oj5szhn ) High Elven tasks I have in mind, To reach beyond, above divine, To establish perspectives true and fine, Of hearts now centered, outside of time. Of dancing souls, both thine and mine, Starclad in moonshine, insight sublime, To share the song of sacred circle, As Far life whirls in joy internal. To learn the truth of being free, As loves light flows eternally, To give of patient, gentle care, As ultimate soul smiles through our stare. Awake and laughing with delight, look now and celebrate the endless height, The softest brightest purest light, The path that knows no end or start, The secret of the opened heart. c.
