"Critics of Salafism often ignore the fact that not all Salafi groups are anti-democratic or pro-violence, just as they ignore the fact that many of these religious and political movements, far from being foreign, have their roots in Tunisian history. A pluralist, democratic Tunisia would seem to require acceptance, rather than marginalization, of those who wear niqab, grow a beard, or choose a different social and political outlook. Debates on these and other related issues will undoubtedly be contentious, but will likely prove to be critical to Tunisia’s democratic transition."
