Croatia has become the 28th member of the European Union, becoming the first new EU member when Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007. It has been 10 years since the country applied for membership. Croatia will not yet join the single currency or the free-movement Schengen zone, where most EU citizens are not subject to passport checks. Now as the 28th EU member, tourism will be one of the country’s main areas that it hopes will benefit from the inclusion, although numbers have already been on the rise in recent years. Ex-tourism minister, Velkjo Ostojić, said last year that joining the EU would “eliminate some procedures” and ease travel to and from Croatia, but it is thought the country will not officially join the Schengen member states until 2015.
