Cross Notes, Monday, October 7 - There are times in life when we hear things that are simply hard to believe or difficult to accept. And at those moments, we often respond by saying something like this, “Do What?” As Jesus was giving the Sermon on the Mount to His disciples, six different times, He said, “You have heard….” And then He followed up with the statement, “But I tell you….” I believe that each time Jesus did this, His disciples probably said, or thought to themselves, “Do what?” This morning we’ll look at the sixth of those “You have heard….. but I say” statements. It’s found in Matthew 5, verses 43-48. Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” When the disciples heard this, they probably thought , “Do What?”. (From the sermon “Do What?” Cross Roads Baptist Church 10-6-13)
