Crossfit Crossovers... So I ran the Hot Intense Summer Marathon - TopicsExpress

Crossfit Crossovers... So I ran the Hot Intense Summer Marathon today in Busan. This race consists of a .75 mile ascent at a 35% grade followed by a 1.44 mile decent at a 23% grade. Then you turn around and go back to the start, and that makes one loop. The race is six compete loops. Last year, I could only do 5 loops and had to stop; I ran out of time (5 hr time limit). This year, I completed it in 3:44:46. I have to say, I dont think I would have done so well had I not been active in Crossfit this past year; I say this for three reasons: Pace: Crossfit has really helped me to learn what pace I should keep depending on what work is being demanded from me. It has also helped me to recognize when I am reaching the point of failure and how to dial it back so that I can stay in form. I ran each loop today in about an even 38 minutes, and didnt walk a single step. Breathing: Crossfit has definitely helped he learn how to breath through my diaphragm to maximize and regulate my oxygen so I do not gas out. Last year this was a big problem for me. The posterior chain: Going up those hills today I did the opposite of what most runners do...instead of running up on my toes (and shredding my calves) I kept my head neutral and core tight, then for each foot I landed mid strike, rolled my weight slightly back, engaged my posterior chain, drove through my heel, and opened my hip at the top of the thrust. The result was an even and steady level of energy and minimal wear on any one component (No shredding of the quads, calfs, hamstrings, or hip flexors). I would like to see if I can somehow translate this into flat running. Anyway, sorry for the dissertation on hill running, just thought I would share.
