Crossing Saravanampatti and noticed something that was of concern.... Saw this smart young man who was not wearing his foot wear and wearing a black towel around his neck walk to a small shop to buy a cigarette! He had adorned Malai in preparation to go to Sabarimalai! Is willing to wear the malai and the towel and not wear shoes... But cant be without smoking! The idea of going to Sabarimalai is to be in penance or to resist some temptations.... We should view it as a challenge and adventure to try to live by the rules.... That is the only purpose of this practice.... Its for the change in the mind and our ways... Swami Ayyappa is a young person and is seen as someone who is living with certain ideals, and the idea is that we too try to be inspired.... If one cannot resist the habits or language or practices or thoughts, its best to only wear the Malai only when you leave for the temple.... But even then we notice many Ayyappa Swamis intoxicated in other temples.... I have never been there till now, as in am still not sure if I can follow a perfect penance period with the body and mind clear for 48 days... Hence take this liberty to write this.... And this is not to offend any one....
