Crunch-crunch-crunch. Kori was on a subway train eating a bag - TopicsExpress

Crunch-crunch-crunch. Kori was on a subway train eating a bag of miniature chocolate chip cookies. His only regret was that he had no milk with which to wash them down. But he would soon be at his station and there he would purchase some. The train bumped a little and the lights went out for a couple of seconds. Typical of the subway in this part of town. It was like something out of the dark ages. Opposite Kori was a girl, an awkward looking blond, pretty in a kind of nerdy way, and next to her was an old man reading the paper. Next to him was an old black woman and apart from a snoozing tramp down one end of the carriage, the train seemed quite empty. It jogged again and, again, the lights went out for a couple of seconds. The old woman tutted. Crunch-crunch-crunch. The old man look up from his paper and at Kori. Kori looked back and felt like the man was going to say something, like quit crunching so loud, or quit rustling that damn packet. But he didnt. Uh, said Kori, would you like a cookie? He offered the pack across the walkway. No, said the old man. Im... No. No thank you. and he went back to reading the news. By that time, the old black woman was also looking at Kori. He suddenly felt quite uncomfortable. Um, he said, would /you/ like one? The woman smiled, apparently quite surprised, and nodded. Thank you, young man. Thank you kindly. She took a cookie from the offered packet and bit it in two. Kori smiled and leaned back in his seat. Bump, bump, bump. The lights went of once again before flickering on again almost immediately. The girl opposite Kori, minding her own business until now, found a bag of cookies gently swaying in front of her, held out by a gently smiling stranger who went on to say, Cookie? Theyre real tasty! Just then, as the girl was ready to answer, there were two more bumps, and then another two, the lights went out and there was a dramatic and piercing screeching sound as the train slammed on its brakes and came to an eventual stop. The passengers all lurched to one side, barely able to keep their seats, as the momentum of the train switched so violently. The lights remained off too, and in the underground subway tunnel miles from any route to the surface, it was more or less entirely pitch black. Kori sat back in his seat and decided hed save the rest of the bag until later. Hed lost his appetite. Is everyone all right? he asked, folding the pack and putting it in his backpack. Im fine, said the old man. But Ill be damned if I know where my paper ended up. Kori couldnt see him in the dark but he smiled anyway. Ive seen better days, said the old woman. That just left the girl. What about you? asked Kori.
