Crystal Torres Through health and fitness I have turned my life around. I have been overweight ever since I was teenager. I suffered anxiety and depression, this on top of my low self-esteem from being overweight was overbearing as a teenager. I was frustrated, sad and I felt so alone. This eventually led to self-injury and suicidal actions. It was a very hard time in my life and I was in such a dark place. I never thought Id be able to crawl out of the hole of despair. I couldnt see the light at the end of the tunnel. I couldnt just shut things off and be happy. It was so much harder than that. My mind played tricks on itself and made me believe I was not worth it, that I would amount to nothing. I never realized but through all those years, food had become my comfort. By the time I turned 21, I weighed 244 pounds. This was a shock to me, I knew I was slowly gaining weight, but I never realized how much. At that time I decided to turn my life around. I started running, lifting weights, do HIIT, anything I could do to make myself better. As the weight started dropping, I was not only doing better physically but mentally as well. All the demons I had been fighting in my head were suddenly gone. I gained such a sense of accomplishment and pride in pushing myself to my limits. I learned I was capable of anything I wanted to do with hard work. I have lost 95lbs since I began my journey. Health and fitness has no longer become about losing weight, it is now about having fun and pushing my body to its best. I have been doing trail runs, Obstacle course races, street runs, and have a fire truck pull coming up in the near future. Since 2013, I have done 1 run a month. Fitness has changed my life and pulled me through some tough times. I hope to inspire others to fight their own personal struggles with mental illness, addiction, or any other ailments they may have through a healthy lifestyle. It is so much more than the physical change, the mental change is really what makes the journey worth it. You can conquer every battle, whatever it may be.
