Cub Football...from Pat Jacobs Loyola’s freshman Blue Team takes apart Bishop Amat 35-14 A sterling offensive game plan designed by head coach Rick Pedroarias was executed to near perfection by the Cub freshman Blue Team yesterday at Loyola as the Cubs shocked 8-1 Bishop Amat 35-14. It is believed to be the largest point margin in a victory by a Loyola freshman team in the history of the series between the two rivals dating back to 1968. Quarterback Will McCracken completed timely passes, two for touchdowns, which set up the run game for Drake Beasley who scored three touchdowns of 80, 75 and three yards and gained 267 yards on 24 carries (11 yards per carry average) from scrimmage. The Cub defense played its best game of the year against a Lancer squad whose lone loss of the season was to Alemany, who trailed Amat 8-7 heading into the fourth quarter of that tightly contested battle two weeks ago. Bishop Amat entered yesterday’s game averaging 33 points per outing. The Lancers tallied 34 points in their victory over Santa Margarita, scored 51 points against Chino Hills, 40 against Charter Oak, 34 against St. Paul, 49 against Culver City and 55 against Crespi. Amat defeated Notre Dame’s freshman squad 28-21. The Loyola Blue Team finished the season 7-3, and played by far its best game in its final contest of the campaign. As noted here many times, the prodigious talent of Beasley will be showcased at Loyola in the years to come. His skills are at a level rarely seen. Congratulations on a very good campaign are in order both to the team and coaches Pedroarias, Fernie Henandez, Phil Renard and Jorge Torres. Loyola varsity travels to Amat tonight Loyola’s varsity football team will play its final regular season game against Bishop Amat tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Lancers’ home field in La Puente. If the Cubs win, if Crespi beats Alemany, and if Santa Margarita defeats JSerra and finishes fifth (after coin tosses) in the Trinity League, Loyola will have a good chance of making the CIF playoffs. Here’s predicting the Cubs win and the stars align perfectly for a Loyola at-large berth in the Pac-5 playoffs.
