Culled from INEC dailybulletin CODE OF CONDUCT A FRAMEWORK FOR GOOD BEHAVIOUR BY POLITICAL PARTIES, PROF JEGA The revised Code of Conduct for political parties represents a framework for ensuring that our politics is devoid of rancor but characterized by good behavior, spirit of accommodation and working together by our political parties. It also provides an improved framework upon which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would engage the political parties between now and the 2015 General Elections. The INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega stated these yesterday at the presentation of the revised Code of Conduct for Political Parties at the Hydro Hotels, Minna, Niger state. Professor Jega reminded the political parties that Nigerians aspired to the dividends of the democratic project and they could only have them if the parties comported themselves in a civilized manner. Said he: “Nigerians aspire for democracy. They want the gains of democracy to be institutionalised. We can only do that if we continue to work in a peaceful and civil atmosphere that will ensure the actualization of that aspiration.” The INEC Chairman who announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will be flagged off by September this year by the Commission urged the parties to sensitise and mobilize Nigerians to register in order to exercise their franchise in 2015. In her speech, the Chairperson of the Political Parties Monitoring Committee, Hajiya Amina B. Zakari, said the Political Parties Code of Conduct 2013 represented clear commitments by political parties to operate not only within the law but also promote inter/intra party dialogue towards enhancing the electoral environment. She explained that Section 10(1-4) of the 2013 Code of Conduct encapsulated the salient commitments for which all registered political parties had freely subscribed to and would freely enforce. Commissioner Zakari further explained that the same issues were addressed in the 2011 Code of Conduct but that they have now been expatiated upon and better structured in the 2013 Code. The Chairman of the Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC), Dr. Yunusa Tanko, expressed joy at the presentation of the 2013 Code of Conduct. He charged political parties to abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, their own (party) constitutions and the Electoral Act. Dr Tanko called on the National Assembly to fund the political parties as that would give vent to a myriad of views and offer varied choices to Nigerians.
