March 2It is said that christianity was first introduced into ile ife by portuguese missionaries during the reign of Ooni Ogboru.this Ooni embraced christianity and a roman catholic church was built at a place known as Oke-Ileri(hill of vows) in Ile-Ife.priests of the traditional deities of Ile-Ife were opposed to the new religion of christianity,presumably because it diminished their own influence and control over the people.It was therefore not allowed to develop a firm foothold. The devetees of Obatala in particular conspired to dislodge the new religion.They held a meeting in a grove located in a place within Ilode quarters known as Igbotapa(the grove of rebellion).At another location within ilare quarters which also subsequently came to be known as Oketase(hill of revolt),the devotees of ifa orunmila(the divination god)also plan their own revolt.these traditional religionists eventually won the support of those who had grown impatient for change owing to Ogborus long reign which was said to have lasted for seventy years.the conspirators rose in revolt and disposed Ogboru who consequently emigrated with a band of his staunch supporters to found a new settlement called Ife-Odan. Following the deposition of Ogboru,the conspirators attached and killed the christians and burried them with their bibles,crucifixies and other religion emblems in a mass grave at a place now known as Igbolokun in okerewe quarters.they erected a shrine for obatala(orisanla)where the rebellion was initially hatched,and there a new Ooni and every succeeding Ooni ever since was made to worship prior to his final installation.christianity could not be reintroduced into ile ife until about three hundred years later.
