{Culture} Estate Museum "Ostankino". Ostankino is a unique architectural and artistic monument inseparably linked to the history of both Russian and European theatre arts. The estate’s architectural ensemble took four centuries to shape. Previously the land of a boyar with a pond (16th century), the Holy (Life-Giving) Trinity Church (17th century), a manor and an oak park, by the end of the 18th century it evolved into the grand summer residence of Prince Nikolai Sheremetev with a palace and a park. The mere fact that the Ostankino Palace is entirely wooden — built from Siberian pine trees and plastered so that it appears as a stone structure — makes it remarkable. Nowadays, the building is considered a monument of the Russian classicism of the 18th century with precious artistic value and uniqueness as far as its state of preservation is concerned. The design of this exceptional building was the result of combined efforts by famous architects working in Russia at the time, including Francesco Camporesi, Vincenzo Brenna, Ivan Starov. The design was brought to fruition by Count Sheremetev’s serf architects — Alexei Mironov and Pavel Argunov. In 1918, the Ostankino estate, with all of its buildings, was taken under the government’s protection, and ever since it has operated as a museum.
