Cuomo partying in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic on your dime so he can hide from Astorino: NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Saturday, October 18, 2014 Contact Ruben Estrada at 845-537-1307 AS CUOMO ISLAND HOPS TO PRETEND FRIENDSHIP WITH HISPANIC COMMUNITY HIS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH FAILS MISERABLY IN HELPING LANGUAGE MINORITIES ENROLL IN HEALTH CARE EXCHANGE, LATINO LAWMAKERS ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL NEW YORK, NEW YORK, -- Today, leading Hispanic advocates denounced Governor Cuomos recent campaign trips to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico as empty gestures by a Governor that has failed to ensure his administration addresses the basic needs of Hispanic communities right here in New York State. According to Ruben Estrada, Chairman of the Latino National Republican Coalition of New York State, Inc. , A year after the roll-out of the New York Health Benefit Exchange and after spending over $650 million dollars in federal aid to establish the health market place, Governor Cuomos administration has failed to facilitate access by language minorities in their need to access health insurance. Visiting Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic do nothing to help New Yorkers in need of health care, health insurance, jobs or affordable housing. The inability of the Health Exchange website to provide proper information in both a usable form and language appropriate to enroll tens of thousands of eligible New Yorkers is a disgrace and shows the lack of concern by this administration to the important daily needs of Hispanic and other language minorities who are working hard to provide for their children and families. Recent Secret Shopping at the Health Exchange website yielded wrong information and no useful information in other instances. The website failed to provide the needed enrollment information in Spanish and other languages, provided online tools that yielded no information on query, and provided toll-free number with extensive and confusing menus. The option for language minorities one enters a Zip Code to find a Navigator in their community to help them enroll yielded not one contact organization that could help in every single one of the dozens of Zip Codes in the Bronx and in Brooklyn entered online at the Exchanges website. According to Estrada, This is unacceptable as well as shameful that Navigator information is not properly linked to the exchange website to help language minorities’ access health insurance. In addition, what did DOH do with the hundreds of millions of dollars received from Washington to fund community groups and Navigators? Are there any Hispanics or ethnic minorities in decision making positions at the Exchange who are supervising the outreach to language minorities? Cuomos Island Hoping campaign tour is symbolic of term as Governor - All smoke and mirrors with no substance. Hispanics in our state need to see his administration for what it is: A failure to provide a better economy, a failure to provide jobs and affordable housing, a failure to administer the health exchange. Estrada also leveled criticism at Hispanic elected officials traveling with Cuomo to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. New Yorks large Hispanic communities are ill-served by their representatives who have failed to uncover this problem and refuse to pressure Cuomo to deliver on the many broken promises he made to Hispanic voters in 2010. Estrada stated, It appears that New Yorks Hispanic Senators and Assembly members fail to understand that the legislative branch is part of the checks and balance system that has made our republic a great democracy. Traveling with the Governor to the Caribbean and staying silent on Cuomos neglect of our communities clearly shows the weak leadership our communities have in Albany. If they can’t help ensure that state agencies perform their required duties with diligence and proper outcome, how on Earth are these Hispanic lawmakers going to have any impact on international affairs? Estrada continued. Looks like these lawmakers need to take care of business here in New York where they live and were elected to serve before they go globetrotting with the Governor.
