Current Vacancies: 2 Posts: Macroeconomists: Macroeconomic Modelling and Forecasting The National Institute of Economic and Social Research is Britain’s longest established independent economic research institute. It specialises in applied research, combining high academic standards with relevance to policy making. Further information is available at niesr.ac.uk/ NIESR is currently looking to fill 2 middle to senior level posts within its global macroeconomic modelling and forecasting team. The team provides a large-scale global econometric model (NiGEM) to users in the policy community, including international bodies such as the IMF and OECD as well as central banks and finance ministries across the world. NiGEM is an estimated, theoretically coherent forward-looking model, designed as a tool for both practical forecasting and for high quality academic research and policy analysis. The successful candidates will play a key role in the future development of NiGEM. They will have responsibility for all stages of NIESR’s forecast for a set of countries and for the maintenance, development and continuous improvement of NiGEM. This includes maintenance and development of country models, forecasting judgements and assumptions, communicating the forecasts through the National Institute Economic Review, direct media contacts and social media, and interactions with the external NiGEM user group. The successful candidates will also be expected to progressively lead training sessions for model users; some travel may be required. The roles will include directed research on NiGEM model development. A brief assessment will be required as part of the interview process. Required skills • A very strong master’s degree or doctorate in Economics and /or Econometrics • Excellent applied econometric skills with experience of standard software packages (e.g. matlab, Stata, Eviews) • Previous experience with macroeconomic modelling and/or forecasting • Keen interest in real world economic and policy developments • Ability to lead teaching and training seminars for a group of peers • Ability to take a leading role in communicating NIESR forecasts to a wide range of audiences • Excellent writing and presentational skills and ability to write fluently in English • Proven ability to work to tight deadlines • Ability to work closely within a team and carry out line-management responsibilities Desirable skills • Knowledge of recent developments in macromodelling, and an understanding of how to apply these within a macromodel • An interest or expertise in one or more of the following countries / regions: United States, Euro Area, Japan, BRICs, Dynamic Asia • Previous teaching experience or a demonstrated ability to present complex ideas to a wide range of audiences • Managerial experience would be an advantage Candidates are likely to be appointed as Research Fellows or Senior Research Fellows. Starting salary will be in the range of £41,548 to £51,026 depending on qualifications and experience. A higher salary may be available for an exceptional candidate. In addition NIESR contributes 16% to a pension scheme for all staff.
