Currently, the National Hurricane Center is predicting Hurricane Arthur to peak at Category 2 strength Friday morning off the North Carolina coast. We took a quick look at the records, back to 1851, and could find only one other hurricane that came near the East Coast on the Fourth of July. That was Hurricane Alice in 1973, though the closest it came was about 600 miles to the east, near Bermuda. Also, if Hurricane Arthur does reach Category 2 strength, it will be the first western Atlantic Category 2 hurricane in July since Hurricane Bertha in 2008.
