Customer focus: Charlotte’s Organic Home Baking: We’re always very interested in our customers at Naturally Good Food – what do they use our products for? What sort of businesses do they run – or what recipes are they using to feed their families? Every so often we manage to corner one of them and find out a little bit more! This week, we got hold of Charlotte Woodbridge, who runs Charlotte’s Organic Home Baking, from Biggleswade. The ‘organic’ bit is in the title: Charlotte also specialises in wheat- and gluten-free ‘indulgent’ home baking. She says: ‘It had always been my dream to run my own tea shop, providing people with tasty treats and a relaxed comfy place to meet friends. In 2009, after a couple of life-changing events, I found myself in a position where I could begin to make my dreams become reality. I spent the next couple of years planning, researching, baking and testing and created Charlotte’s Organic Home Baking. It’s not a tea shop, but maybe that will come in the future!’ During the planning phase, Charlotte became aware how difficult it was to find decent treats for people with food intolerances or allergies. As she remarked: ‘this seemed madness, as surely it wasn’t that difficult to bake products with alternative ingredients.’ It isn’t quite that easy though – as many of our customers know! Gluten-free baking requires a lot of skill and a careful sourcing of ingredients. Charlotte readily agrees that she had many disasters ‘coming out of the oven and going straight into the dustbin!’ However, gradually it all became much simpler. Now she makes cakes and cupcakes, brownies, cookies, scones, seasonal preserves and chocolates with no problems at all! Charlotte’s Organic Home Baking officially started in 2011, at Baldock Farmers Market. She now attends other farmers’ markets, craft fairs and food festivals, and makes a lot of cakes to order. And things are going brilliantly! The business won a gold star at the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards in 2013, for a wheat-, gluten- and dairy-free carrot cake cupcake. Charlotte has entered her brownies this year in the same competition. Charlotte will only use the finest organic and ‘free from’ ingredients. To this end, she sources many of her ingredients from Naturally Good Food – and we’re delighted to quote her on this: ‘It is so lovely to be able to work with you guys, as I think you are a fabulous company and I buy so many of my ingredients from you. Like I said to Sue, I recommend you to all my customers. My Mum even buys from you now, and has done for some time!’ Click here to see our full range of gluten-free ingredients and products. Fingers crossed that this business goes from strength to strength, and that the teashop perhaps one day becomes a reality!
