Cuyamaca College 6K Report I was so busy today I am just now getting to write about this mornings race. I found my way out to Lindo Lake in Lakeside with minimal trouble, I even got rockstar parking at the VFW when they spotted the DOD decal on the dash. I was able to breaze through bib pickup and get started on warming up...or at least trying to. It was supposedly in the 40s this morning pre-race, all I know is I could not feel my hands. It was fun listening to the group ahead of me discuss how guys from cold weather are not better at handling the cold, they just have the right stuff. I agree, but it wasnt doing me much good hanging in a closet at home. I was WAY to far back at race start. I thought I positioned myself well but people kept lining up in front; I ended up having to weave through quite a bit of traffic the first quarter mile or so. After I was able to settle in I started picking people off one at time. I kept the same pony tail guy in vision that I have been following for this whole series, once again I couldnt really close on him but I was able to keep him in sight the whole time. For most of the last lap I could hear footsteps so I knew there was someone behind me, I managed to pass a couple more people but they were still right behind me. Coming around the next to last turn they made their move. I looked over and it was one of the Senior runners. I was pretty used up and if it had been someone in one of the younger age groups I would have let them go but I would be damned if Id let some old man beat me to the line. I laid in sprint with everything I had going into the final stretch, I passed him but he was still right there so I had to keep pusing. There was another PRT runner that was sort of cruising in to the finish, I decided as long as I was killing myself anyway might as well pass him too. I got him about a foot from the finish line. I was totally used up at the end of the race. Looking at my splits I slowed down 10 seconds per mile for the middle two miles, if I could get those 20 seconds back I would be much more competitive. As it is I think I finished 5th or 6th in the Masters category today. Additionally they did 10 year age groups today so there was no award for me. I am pretty bummed that this was my last race of the Dirt Dog XC series. Due to shifting the Championship to Sunday I will not be able to run. I registered for Silver Strand Half Marathon several months ago and have been targeting that race for a PR attempt. I really dont expect much change in the standings, the guys ahead of me have been beating me like a rented mule for two months and the guys behind me are the same as well. I hope to run this series again next year, I just hope I can learn how to properly run these shorter races by then.
