Cyberbullying Can Be Devastating From Instagram to Twitter, from Facebook to apps like Voxer and Kick, school-aged children have found a new way to harass each other with brutal criticisms and inappropriate photos. While physical and verbal abuse and bullying continue on the schoolyard, these new apps make it easy for faceless intruders to send devastating messages to the bedrooms where support isn’t available. Cyberbullying victims are prone to low self-esteem and suicidal thoughts. More than half of the victims of cyberbullying suffer in silence, afraid a worried parent may take away their phones. Sadly, California is first in the nation in cyberbullying, according to The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics. New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Washington round out the “five-worst” list. Recent findings by Health and Human Services suggest that 52% of all students today have experienced cyberbullying at least once. Some 20% of online teens endure cyberbullying on a routine basis.
