Cycle NZ 14: Day 14. Now in the South Islands and rain! Today - TopicsExpress

Cycle NZ 14: Day 14. Now in the South Islands and rain! Today was a great stepping stone to the final section of the ride – leaving the capital city behind me I felt good to be at last moving towards the South Islands. The weather has been playing on my mind and as the ferry approached the South you could see the dark clouds, rain and strong winds whipping over the hills. We crossed the Cook Strait and between the Islands inlet through Tory Sound. Ive traveled so many times through frozen sounds within the Canadian high Arctic and imagined the sea completely frozen. On the map there were areas – out posts – look outs from Cooks voyages through the area – I felt a real sense of history and discovery as we approached the harbor at Picton. The captain summed it up as we final stopped “welcome to Picton – the gate way to the South” I was first off. Packed and ready – straight out of the ferry into the rain and wind through the main street of Picton. Within minutes I found a room and my kit is packed prepared and like me eager to get on the road tomorrow. I have spent the last 24 hours waiting for the ferry and even though it was good rest I am now keen to get back on my bike. I have been offered an exciting talk on Skype on the 19th as part of an EXTREME progam for the TED talks. So I need to get into a decent location with good internet to go live with a really good panel of speakers from the exploring world. I’ll post more on this later. I think my sunny rides are over and it’s time to break out the rain proof gear. I really don’t think this section is going to be easy. I just want to say hello to my good friend Holly and his family –Rex rides again!!
