Cycling....a Paceline is when several cyclists ride one behind the other. There isnt much space between the back wheel of the guy in the front, and the front wheel of the guy in back. Why? It increases the efficiency of all the riders. The person in the very front pulls the entire line. Each cyclist takes a turn at the front, which usually lasts anywhere from a mile to a few miles or more, depending on the group. When the person in front is ready to give the pull to the next rider, he pulls off to the left just a bit, which signals the next rider to take the lead. Then the rider who pulled over, drifts back to the last position. The guy who takes over must be careful to maintain the current speed. When youre behind another rider, you enjoy their slipstream, which makes your work much easier. Ive heard people estimate the effort reduction at 30%, which is significant. On a long ride, this is how its done. Why do I care? I had a great ride today and had a great time BECAUSE I was in a Paceline with three other cyclists. I know the course, which is very challenging due to the hills. By myself, I couldnt come close to my time today. So, Im grateful to the other three cyclists for their strong, consistent riding. Theres no I in TEAM.
