Cypress Gallery Column – MAY 2014 By Terry Taylor The month of May came to Lompoc like summer and now has decided to behave more normally, which I am glad of. Too much heat makes me cranky. There’s a special show this month at the Gallery called “Shoe Sale.” Are you the kind of person who can never have too many shoes? Then, this is a must-see show for you. There are special creations by our best artists on exhibit with 2-D, 3-D and wonderfully silly represented. Some of my favorites are Joellen Chrones’ functional jewelry hanger featuring a brightly colored glass high-heeled pump mounted on smooth wood, Nicole LeRoux’s acrylic painting of a Jack Russell terrier in soft shoes entitled “Hushpuppy,” and Linda Gooch’s “Speed Demon Racing Shoe,” sculpture of found items shows her devilish side. Trish Campbell’s “Eye of the Sole” mixed media piece will definitely catch your eye. Judith-Grames Lyra’s “Empty Shoes in Space” and Rosalea Greenwood’s “Olympic Dreams,” both watercolor paintings, tell us how different shoes can be. New member Shelly “Schelz” Young’s framed pewter repousse called “My Kingdom for a Fancy Shoe” gives us still another way of looking at a shoe. Tom Chrones moved away from photography for this show with his “The Old Woman Lives in a Mobile Shoe” mixed media sculpture featuring a roller skate and both Kathy Badrak and Dee Fraser approached their gourd shoes in very different fashion, with Kathy’s “Soleful Gourd” being thoughtfully somber and Dee’s “Gourds Clowning Around” rounding out the spectrum with bold and fanciful colors. Be sure to visit before May 26th to see these and other pieces submitted by local artists. That’s just the front room . The main gallery is filled with some stunning pieces, including Vicki Andersen’s acrylic “Jalama Ranch House, Betsee Talavera’s acrylic “Spring at the Coast,” and Christine Kraus’ brilliantly painted “Two Harbors.” As always, there is never enough room to mention everyone, but our artists are all extremely talented. The Gallery offers many gift items, including cards, prints, jewelry, pottery, glass and much, much more. Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association, and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Olde Towne Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129.
